چکیده

Partial matching is a fundamental problem in shape analysis, a field that is recently gaining an increasing importance in computer graphics. This paper proposes a novel approach to performing partial matching of surfaces. Given two surfaces MA and MB, our goal is to find the best match to MA within MB. The key idea of our approach is to integrate feature-point similarity and segment similarity. Specifically, we introduce a probabilistic framework in which the segmentation and the correspondences of neighboring feature points allow us to enhance or moderate our certainty of a feature-point similarity. The utility of our algorithm is demonstrated in the domain of archaeology, where digital archiving is becoming ever more widespread. In this domain, automatic matching can serve as a worthy alternative to the expensive and time-consuming manual procedure that is used today.

The Usability of Vectorization and a New Point Matching Procedure as First Step in Conflating Raster and Vector Maps

The growing fields of GIS application (local administration, tourism, archaeology, geology, ...) has increased the interest in studying the information sharing from different geographic databases, also known as “GIS data interoperability”. This is a huge problem, involving several aspects. Among them, we decided to concentrate an a geometric conflation of different maps since maps coming from d...

Identifying designs from incomplete, fragmented cultural heritage objects by curve-pattern matching

Study of cultural-heritage objects with embellished realistic and abstract designs made up of connected and intertwined curves crosscuts a number of related disciplines, including archaeology, art history, and heritage management. However, many objects, such as pottery sherds found in the archaeological record, are fragmentary, making the underlying complete designs unknowable at the scale of t...

Study of cultural and historical materials excavated from the archaeological excavation is one of the most important goals of Archaeometry, in order to answer a lot of questions in archaeology. In this regard, elemental analysis is important factors in the realization of this aim. Numerous analytical methods have been used for this purpose traditionally. Among them, X-ray fluorescence spectrosc...

Putting the Pieces Together: Regularized Multi-part Shape Matching

Multi-part shape matching is an important class of problems, arising in many fields such as computational archaeology, biology, geometry processing, computer graphics and vision. In this paper, we address the problem of simultaneous matching and segmentation of multiple shapes. We assume to be given a reference shape and multiple parts partially matching the reference. Each of these parts can h...

Understanding Fossil Phytolith Preservation: The Role of Partial Dissolution in Paleoecology and Archaeology

Opaline phytoliths are important microfossils used for paleoecological and archaeological reconstructions that are primarily based on relative ratios of specific morphotypes. Recent studies have shown that phytolith assemblages are prone to post-depositional alteration involving partial dissolution, however, the manner in which partial dissolution affects morphotype composition is poorly unders...
